In this programme, producer Martha Hawley goes in search of her great uncle, Edwin Hawley, known in her family as Uncle Ned. Born in 1881, he left for China as a young man, a staunch Presbyterian minister who was part of a wave of fervent Christians from the West intent on converting the Chinese. By the end of the 19th century, a great deal of hostility had built up in China towards Western foreign influence, and Uncle Ned appears to have met a tragic end.
