During the Cold War, Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty played a crucial role in the struggle against communism. With the collapse of the Iron Curtain, they needed a new purpose. In the wake of 9/11, they were mobilised to support the United States’ war on terrorism.

Broadcasting has become a key component in Washington’s campaign to win the hearts and minds of Muslims. If Cold War broadcasts were dominated by politics, religion has become one of the main topics of discussion on Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty. Now, more than half the 28 language services broadcast to parts of the world that are predominantly Muslim. Their aim is to give a voice to moderate Muslims and none to extremists.
