Pete Myers interviews Shirley Bassey (1972)

This programme is part of the series Pete Myers' interviews
Shirley Bassey ( Rob Mieremet)

18-year-old Shirley Bassey caused a sensation as the “Tigress from Cardiff Bay” when she first appeared in a London West End show in 1956. Her rendition of “Burn my Candle” outraged the establishment, but by then it was already too late to stop her from skyrocketing to stardom. One of the bedazzled teenagers in the audience back in 1956 was Pete Myers, and he spoke with Bassey for this edition of the BBC programme “PM” in 1972.

Before joining Radio Netherlands in 1976, Pete Myers hosted BBC programmes like “Late Night Extra” and “PM” and spoke with some of the greatest artists in musical and theatre entertainment passing through London in the early 1970’s. This recording is from his personal collection.
