
On June 12, the Philippines celebrated the 100th anniversary of its declaration of independence from Spain. The irony is that it was, in fact, handed over to the United States for 20 million dollars. Hélène Michaud looks at Filipino identity today, as shaped by over 300 years spent in a cultural convent, followed by 50 years in Hollywood.
