A programme about the disappearing way of life of inland skippers. Bulk transport on river barges accounted for half of Europe’s marine freight traffic when this programme was made. Half of the transport was carried out by Dutch vessels. Although river transport is increasing in importance, there is intense competition from overland lorry transport .
