A total eclipse of the sun was seen in England on August 11, 1999. Our science editor Laura Durnford, a native of Cornwall, went home to witness this unique event, when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun. For most people in England at the time, it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, a rare occurrence that will not take place there again until 2090.
