“War of words” was a five-part series in the weekly Sound Fountain programme about information in times of conflict. Some of the world’s leading experts in the field of communications and peace studies give their views on propaganda, corporate media, war correspondents and negotiators. In this final programme in the series, we look at how music has always been a powerful way to express dissent in times of war. Anti-war songs of the past such as John Lennon’s “Imagine” galvanised peace movements, and they also enjoyed enormous mainstream appeal. However, since September 11th, for the first time in an American conflict, dissent has not been expressed in music.
