In this two-part series, Martha Hawley visits Suriname, 20 years after independence to find out how the country and its people are coping.

This programme focuses on the political and economic malaise and ethnic troubles which followed independence in 1975 and the 1980 military coup. The political and education system have failed to give people the sense of a national identity.
