
For nearly four decades, the Basque separatist movement ETA has been fighting for an independent Basque country in northern Spain and the southwestern part of France. ETA was established in response to the repression of the Franco dictatorship. Democracy was restored in Spain in the mid-1970’s, yet ETA has continued its armed struggle. It carried out is first terrorist attack in 1968 and has since murdered almost 1000 people.
Eric Beauchemin looks at the origins of Basque nationalism, the emergence of ETA and why the Basque separatist movement is continuing its armed struggle for an independent Basque nation.
