In the fourth and last programme in the Collective Memory series, Michele Ernsting goes to the Jordaan, the famous Amsterdam district, to find out more about the residents’ passion for opera, the life song of the community. The Jordaan produced many singers who became famous for their operatic ballads about the hardship and romance of their beloved neighbourhood.
With growing prosperity, the rich musical tradition declined. However, the longing to recreate that old Jordaan feeling of the first half of the 20th century remains strong.
