Pharaonic fever: Bibliotheca Alexandria

Library of Alexandria (© Ahmed Yunis Sif Saad)

Martha Hawley visits Alexandria, site of the famous ancient library, founded in Egypt’s pre-Islamic days by Alexander the Great, as well as the location of a new version which opened in 2001, which she visits. The revival of Egypt’s cultural heritage (pharaonic, Hellenistic, Christian and Islamic) and how to carry it forward is important for Islamic scholars today. That includes a literacy programme, but also Islam on the Internet.
