Within the European Community, Greek has the unique distinction of being a language spoken uninterruptedly for four thousand  years. It has been a written language for over three thousand years, and during that time Greek has communicated thoughts and ideas and poetry and stories that deeply affect all of humanity to this day. Greek occupies its own Hellenic branch of the Indo-European languages.
