In the 17th century, the town of Djenné in Mali was a major trading centre in West Africa. Merchants came from far and wide to sell and buy gold, slaves, salt and other products. The programme focuses looks at the importance of the ancient kingdoms of Ghana, Mali and Songhai and pays a visit to Djenné today.
