The programme opens with a visit to Porto Romano, one of Albania’s worst environmental hotspots. Tonnes of toxic chemicals have been left on a former industrial site where people have made their homes. The situation reflects Albania’s communist legacy: the xenophobic Communist regime, in its attempt to achieve self-reliance, showed no concern for the environment and waste disposal. Porto Romano will be cleaned up with money from the Dutch.
