Dutch psychiatrist Jan Bastiaans (1917-1997) identified this syndrome and developed a treatment for it, sometimes using LSD, which was highly controversial but effective. It not only applies to victims of horrendous war experiences but also other victims of life-threatening experiences, such as hostage-taking.
Susan Calland talks to Professor Bastiaans about his work and reaction to it on the eve of his retirement.
