His description of Britain (“The Kingdom by the Sea”) and of railway journeys from London to East Asia (“The Great Railway Bazaar”), from New England to the southern tip of Argentina (“The Patagonian Express”) and from Cairo to South Africa (“Dark Star Safari”) are classics of travel writing.
